This beautifully understated house was built by a Belgian architect in 2001 to integrate with its spectacular setting in the Vallée des Baux at the foot of the Alpilles Mountains, in six hectares of grounds including extensive olive groves. The location is a haven of peace, and there are panoramic views from the terraces and pool area. A large covered terrace provides a pleasant dining area and extends onto a smaller uncovered decked terrace overlooking the garden. To the side of the house is a shady lawned garden with a stone fountain, ideal for relaxing on hot summer afternoons. The large swimming pool has an electric cover and is set in a large terrace with loungers and a covered seating area. There is a pool house with a sauna, sink, refrigerator, shower and wc.
The interior is an elegant blend of antiques and good quality furniture, and very tasteful decorative and modern touches. The accommodation is set out on two levels. On the upper level are the main living areas including a vast and comfortable living room with a piano opening onto a scenic balcony, a separate dining room and a very well-equipped modern kitchen with breakfast area opening onto a large covered terrace. Also on this floor are a separate wc, and two double bedrooms (one with a terrace, both with 160cm wide beds), which share a bathroom with a wc.
On the lower level are two double bedrooms: the first bedroom is the master bedroom with a double bed (160cm wide), a dressing room, and a large en suite bathroom with a separate shower, wc, sauna and hammam; this bedroom also opens onto the garden. The second bedroom has a double bed (200cm wide) and an en suite shower room with a wc and opens onto a verandah and garden.
There is an annexe with external access only which contains a kitchenette, a double bedroom (160cm wide bed) and a bathroom with a wc.

The property is located in a wonderful area for exploring the very south of Provence close to the Camargue, near Les Baux and Les Alpilles. Arles and Avignon are also nearby.
Perched on the northern tip of the Camargue is the historic Roman provençal capital of Arles, with its 1st century amphitheatre and théâtre antique. Van Gogh came to Arles in 1888 and was inspired by the town and its light, producing many of his greatest works until madness overtook him. St-Rémy-de-Provence, where Van Gogh was hospitalized, was built on the site of the Greco-Roman city of Glanum, fascinating vestiges of which are still in evidence. The twisted limestone landscapes of the nearby Parc des Alpilles rise dramatically from the Rhône plain, and from their hilltop stronghold the quarrelsome lords of Les-Baux-de-Provence dominated the region for several centuries. The ruined castle atop the village offers spectacular views over the Alpilles.
