Location |
This unusual and luxurious former post office is located in the most sought-after and charming village of Ménerbes, immortalised in Peter Mayle's 'A Year in Provence', next to the impressive Citadelle close to which Picasso once lived. Ménerbes has a bakery, various small shops, restaurants and cafés, and a pétanque court (200m). There are many lovely villages nearby: Bonnieux (15km), Roussillon (16km), Oppède-le-Vieux (5km), Lacoste (6.5km), Goult (7.5km) among many others. L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, famous for its antiques market and intricate waterways is 19km away. There is a huge provençal market at Lourmarin (28km). The larger towns of Cavaillon (16km) and Apt (21km) have markets on Monday, and Tuesday and Saturday respectively. Avignon is 39km away, and Aix-en-Provence 74km.
There is a tennis court in Oppède (4.5km), horse riding near Lagnes (13km), bike hire and a Sunday market at Coustellet (9km), and 9 and 18 hole golf courses 19km away at Saumane-de-Vaucluse. Canoeing and kayaking are possible in the Sorgue River and a leisure lake near Apt offers water sports and fishing (no swimming). There are beautiful beaches all along the Mediterranean coast with the closest in Marseille and Carry-le-Rouet (both 93km), Sausset-les-Pins (98km) and La Couronne (102km).
There are great activities for children nearby: visit the Haribo factory, a crocodile farm, a bamboo forest, grottoes, a giant maze, and a treetop adventure course (further details at the house). |

Exterior |
The design of this daring restoration has allowed for the creation of a wonderful outdoor space within the walls of the house and the original troglodyte cave within the rock face of the cliff the village is built against. This large courtyard is cool in the summer and ideal for outdoor meals. The setting of the house is peaceful and there is a roof-top terrace with exceptional views.
Street parking is plentiful, even in summer.
The owner has made arrangements with a boutique hotel (www.roy-soleil.com) 2km away (15mins by foot) for clients to use their pool. |

Interior |
Elegantly restored and tastefully decorated to a high standard, the interior captures the building's orginal historical charm. Its contemporary style enhances the orginal architectural detail - brick walls, terracotta floors, stone from the local quarry and the design allows in Provence's magical light.
On the ground floor is a large living/dining area opening onto the courtyard, a beautifully equipped kitchen with a table, and a separate wc. On the first floor are two spacious double bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom with a separate shower and a wc, another with an en suite bathroom with a wc. On the second floor is a large sitting area the length of the glass wall which overlooks the courtyard. It opens onto two double (or twin) bedrooms which share a shower room. There are also one separate wc on this floor, as well as a double bedroom with an integrated bathroom and wc.
There are incredible views of the Luberon Valley from all the bedrooms and bathrooms. |
