Located in a beautiful part of the northern Dordogne, this spectacular Château dates back to the 9th and 12th centuries. The closest shops (bakery, small supermarket) are in the small village of Augignac (3km) while the larger village of Nontron with its Saturday market and many shops is 9km away. The closest supermarket is at Piégut (6km) which has a market on Wednesdays. Bread, fruit and veg can be delivered to the Château three times a week.
There is an array of interesting places and activities in the area: Le Roc Branlant at St-Estèphe (5km), the caves at Villars (23km) with their prehistoric paintings, the lovely village of St-Jean-de-Côle (32km), the truffle museum at Sorges (48km), the superb château of Puyguilhem (23km), and many churches and châteaux. A little further afield are the picturesque towns of Brantôme, the Venice of Périgord (30km) and the medieval fortress and Renaissance château at Bourdeilles (38km). Both Limoges and Angoûlème are about an hour's drive away.
Horse riding is possible at St-Estèphe and bike hire at Piégut. There are many leisure lakes in the area where swimming is possible. There are beaches at the lakes of St-Estèphe, St-Saud-Lacoussière (13km) and St-Mathieu (18km). Pedaloes can be rented at St-Estèphe, and canoes can be hired at Brantôme and Bourdeilles. There are a 9 and 18 hole golf course at Ecuras (21km).
There are two entrances to the Château. One is at garden level which comprises the dining room and the kitchen. The other is at ground level next to the pool; a hallway with a stunning stone spiral staircase (children and elderly persons must take care) leads to a very large living room with beautiful stone floors, original beams and two fireplaces. On this floor there are also a sitting room, a library with comfortable seating and a shower room with a wc.
On the first floor are two double bedrooms, one with a single bed for a child, each with an en suite bathroom with a wc. On the second floor is the children's area with a twin bedroom, a double bedroom, a playroom on the landing with a single bed, and a shower room with a wc.
Annexe 1 is located close to the Château and consists of a large single bedroom at ground level with steps up to a double bedroom on a mezzanine which overlooks a living area, and a shower room with a wc.
Annexe 2 is at the entrance of the building complex, 50m from the Château; it has a living area with a single sofabed, a double bedroom on a mezzanine and a shower room with a wc under the stairs.
Occupancy is limited to 10 adults and 5 children.
