Some may find it a little close to Sarlat's suburbs for comfort, but for most this is pretty much the dream Périgord pad - a well-restored 18th-century mill, set in five acres of land dotted with ponds and streams. There's a big pool in the garden and a magnificent double-height sitting room indoors. Bergerac airport is a 90-minute drive.

And lo - a simple Gascon farmhouse became the backdrop for a luxury cookery programme. At least, that's how it should be at Du Chêne. They've gutted the place, turning it into a fashionista's fantasy of open-plan living - and the kitchen is a modern marvel. Handy, because the vibrant markets at Nogaro and Riscle are nearby. Toulouse airport is a two-hour drive.

Our house in Provence was picture-perfect (and, as it was a rental, I didn't have to learn the French for U-bend). It had stone walls, green shutters, a sprawl of Virginia creeper, a kitchen that gave onto the garden, a full-size pool and a long table for meals en plein air. The nearest neighbours were about half a mile away. The village was too far to walk - I was content. All the elements were in place. Cicadas droned, the vineyards slumbered, and so would I.
