When in France
Proof by Passport
British visitors to France must now expect to be asked for proof of their identity in using their credit card for any substantial purchase, because of the proliferation of fraudulent transactions. They may find it more convenient to offer a driver’s licence as some traders are refusing to accept a British passport because it does not carry the bearer’s address. The legal position, however, is that under French law, traders are obliged to accept any European Union passport as sufficient proof of identity. The law was changed to make this clear in February 2002 by Décret No 1001-185.
