In the 1990s an archeological dig near Avignon discovered a large pool that originally stood in the centre of a huge Roman garden. The pool, 65 metres in length, is entirely lined with tiny bricks in an ingenious herringbone design, the first of its kind discovered in Roman Gaul and clearly the centerpiece of the villa.
As all further traces of the layout have been lost, eight thematic gardens containing more than 100 different species have been planted on the site, devoted to the Olympian gods Apollo, Bacchus, Ceres, Diana, Flora, Jupiter, Minerva and Pomone. The gardens will be open to the public in July 2007.
