The Zoo du Mont Faron, outside Toulon, was opened in 1968 and is really a wildlife reserve specializing in breeding rare animals before returning them to their natural habitat. One of its greatest triumphs was the birth last Christmas of triplets, three Bengal tiger cubs, hence their names, Melchior, Gaspard and Balthazar. The Faron Zoo is often asked to hire out its animals for use in feature films: the two elder brothers of the new cubs starred in Jean-Jacques Annaud's film 'Deux Frères'.
Accessible from Toulon by cable-car, the Zoo provides exhilarating views across the Mediterranean from its summit, 584 metres high. It also offers two restaurants, a large picnic area and a museum commemorating the World War II landings in Provence.
