In Brive-la-Gaillarde, Corrèze, Southwest France
The Orchestrades Universelles are an annual musical meeting of youth orchestras from France and all over the world. Around 700 musicians aged between 10 and 25 meet in Brive-la-Gaillarde (Corrèze, France) to take part in this fantastic cultural and musical experience.
Free concerts are given each day by the musicians in important historic places and in the streets of Brive, and two orchestras give a joint performance in the evening. All these concerts are free of charge: the audience (including keen concert-goers as well as simple bystanders) grows and returns year after year.
During these 10 days, the musicians also rehearse and prepare for the final concert of the festival, in which the 700 musicians merge into a huge orchestra on the thousand-square-meter stage in the George Brassens hall, specially converted for this exceptional event, and accommodating an annual audience of 5,000. On this unique occasion, in addition to other orchestral repertoire from a variety of musical styles, a specially commissioned work by a contemporary composer is given its world premiere by the orchestra. The programme for this final gala concert is not announced to the musicians (nor to the public) before the start of the festival. The young participants have only ten days in which to learn, rehearse and perfect their performance. They are taught and coached by professional musicians in sectional and full orchestral rehearsals. The different works performed at the final concert are conducted by professional conductors.
The final concert is the only concert which is not free of charge. Tickets are on sale at the reception desk for the Orchestrades in the Brive town hall.
