Fontaine-Henry, near Bayeux, Normandy
For one weekend, the Château de Fontaine-Henry returns to the 16th century to relive the period of its construction. This delightful château, seemingly plucked from the Loire Valley where most of similar style can be seen, hosts a Renaissance festival, which will pay tribute to the life and prosperity of the period. Hundreds of local people will be taking part dressed in 16th century garb and there will be concerts, arts and crafts exhibitions, cooking demonstrations, a dance workshop, and many children’s activities. Think twice about sampling too much of the recreations of Middle Ages and Renaissance cuisine, though.
