The gardens of the Château of Versailles take on a fascinating new dimension after dark, with terraces and fountains bathed in light, much as they were in the days of spectacular royal celebrations staged by Louis XIV.
But even the Sun King might have been impressed by the firework display created by specialists Groupe F against the backdrop of the Grand Canal, a wonderful theatre of light, carefully controlled conflagration and poetic pyrotechnics, enhanced by music from baroque to the Beatles.
Spectators watch from the safety of the lawns and should note, bringing the level of their expectations back down to earth, that it is all subject to the weather and that cancellations are common in windy conditions.
