On Sundays 18 June, 6 August and 10 September 2006
Saint-Remy-de-Provence’s most famous artist was Vincent van Gogh, who painted almost 150 pictures here during a year-long stay. At the time, however, he just happened to be an inmate of the local lunatic asylum, where Van Gogh had committed himself after slicing off his own ear at Arles. Today’s Provençal painters may be less dangerously gifted and less prolific, but this festival offers a unique chance to see about 250 of them, working in Saint-Rémy’s timeless streets. In all some 6,000 of their pictures will be on display, many with the paint scarcely dry, a chance to buy a future masterpiece perhaps, for a handful of Euros. The diversity of the work is extraordinary, and while the festival is on, bars never shut and Saint-Rémy never sleeps.
