The traditional, and cheapest, means of visiting France remains to drive your car from your home to your holiday villa. You can enter France either by using the Shuttle, where vehicles and their passengers are transported through the Channel Tunnel on special wagons, or by travelling on modern ferries, where passengers are required to leave their vehicles on designated decks. Although the Shuttle is faster, some visitors to France find the ferries more relaxing and an opportunity to have a meal or go shopping at advantageous prices.
A wide range of cross-Channel services is available from the main coastal ports. The quickest and largest ferries in general operate on the shortest routes, such as Dover to Calais, and compare favourably with cruise ships in terms of their size and amenities. Cabins are available for overnight schedules on the longer routes in the western Channel approaches. Catamaran services operate out of, especially, Dover and Portsmouth, dramatically shortening journey times, but with some loss of comfort.
The Shuttle and most French ports accommodating Channel ferries are now directly linked into the French autoroute system, significantly reducing journey times. Motorists unfamiliar with the Continental practice of driving on the left have an opportunity to acclimatise themselves gently on the motorway network. Apart from weekends in the summer peak, July and August, congestion is rare but most French autoroutes are run by private contractors, who collect tolls at regular intervals along the way. The motorways provide a fast means of reaching your villa with, at most, one overnight stay in each direction, if you are travelling to the furthest extremities of France.
