What to do in June? Discover St-Rémy-de-Provence

21 Apr 2015 BY Dominique's Villas

June is one of the best times of the year to visit St-Rémy-de-Provence. The town is not crowded, the weather tends to be warm, not too hot, the boulevards dappled under the plane trees and lavender everywhere coming into its full glory.

June is when the people of Provence love to come out and show off their prize bulls. On Wednesday 24th June and then again on Saturday 27th June, cowboys from the Camargue will parade their animals in the St-Rémy arena in a riotous demonstration of agility and strength. It's a spectacle not to be missed and there will be lots of sweets handed out to the kids. It's a fun family event.

There are also many cultural events to choose from. Sunday 14th June sees the first Routes des Artistes, Artists' Promenade. This runs all day on Sunday and the narrow streets and wider boulevards of St-Rémy are packed with artists selling paintings, jewellery and sculpture. Tastes range from the traditional to the resolutely contemporary. It's a fun way to wander around this thriving town, soak up the atmosphere and perhaps end the afternoon with a chilled rosé in one of the pavement cafés.

June is also a great month to appreciate contemporary French and Provençal musical culture. Sunday June 21st is the national Fête de la Musique, when the whole of France takes to the streets for dancing in the squares, concerts and recitals. On St-Rémy's main squares you will see traditional Provençal dancing alongside local and international performers. Many of the cafés and bars invite jazz bands from the world class jazz school nearby in Salon-de-Provence. It's a party atmosphere with something for everyone.

And if you love fashion, on Tuesday 23rd June and Tuesday 30th June the Creative Markets roll out in the streets of the town from 7pm till midnight. Designers from all over the region will set up stalls with jewellery, textiles, clothing, hats and all manner of accessories. It is quite an experience to shop outdoors until late in the balmy evening. The stalls look pretty with their twinkling lights in the dark and there will be lots of good people-watching.
