The lure of the Greek Islands

The lure of the Greek Islands

30 Jan 2015 BY Tim Wells

Travelling to your holiday villa in the Greek islands gets easier all the time, with many direct flights offered to international airports on several of the islands we feature, as well as to Athens. Cephalonia, Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, and Zakynthos are all a few hours’ non-stop flight from several UK cities, including Greek carriers Aegean Air and Olympic. Other Greek islands can be reached by internal flights via Athens, or you can choose a sea crossing, either by normal ferry or high-speed hydrofoil, to your holiday island. From Athens airport travel by taxi to Pireaus harbour, a 40-minute trip, to Rafina (also 40 minutes), or to Lavrio (about one hour). Blue Star Ferries offer both normal ferry crossings and the faster hydrofoil from Piraeus and Rafina to Syros, Mykonos, Naxos, and Santorini among many other island ports. We recommend the slower but more peaceful crossing, if you have the time to spare. You will have the most beautiful island vistas gliding by, and the chance to take in some glorious sea breezes, luxuries not forthcoming on the high-speed crossing, and anyone who ever crossed the Channel in the Jetfoil knows it is not always a comfortable ride.

We update regularly the travel information on our Destinations page.
