Sonia Delaunay
This exhibition at the superb 12th century Château de Lavardens is designed as a tribute to the French tapestry designer and painter, Jean Lurcat, who died, aged 74, at Aubusson forty years ago. In 1914, while convalescing from a wound received on the Western Front, Lurcat sat watching his mother sew at the family home in Sens and was inspired to have her transpose his paintings into tapestries. In 1939 Lurcat moved permanently to Aubusson, the renowned carpet and tapestry centre, and entered into tapestries, as one critic put it, with an enthusiasm and dedication usually reserved for those who enter holy orders.
Three of Lurcat’s greatest works are displayed: La Nuit Franchit le Seuil, Le Ciel et Claires, together with many exceptional pieces by Sonia Delaunay, Alexander Calder, Victor Vasarely, Mario Prassinos, Dom Robert, Lucien Coutaud and Le Corbusier.
The Château is open from 10-7 daily in July and August, 10.30-12.30 and 2-6 in September. Children under 12 have free admission.
